Tameshigiri Cutting Challenge
Blade-sharp precision — live steel, rolled tatami, and zero margin for error.
Overview
The Tameshigiri Cutting Challenge puts swordsmanship to the ultimate test. Competitors face rolled tatami omote targets with a live blade, judged on cut quality, angle, control, and composure under pressure.
Open to practitioners of iaido, kenjutsu, battodo, and related sword arts, the challenge runs on a dedicated cutting stage with certified safety officers supervising every pass.
Divisions & Format
Competitors advance through progressive rounds of increasing difficulty, from single cuts to multi-target combinations, with finals staged Sunday.
Novice Cutting
Single-target basic cuts for competitors with limited live-blade experience.
Intermediate
Multi-cut sequences on single and double targets with prescribed angles.
Advanced / Expert
Complex multi-target patterns, draw cuts, and timed sequences.
Speed Cutting
Most clean cuts completed within the time limit.
Precision Challenge
Thin-target and specialty cuts judged on exactness of angle.
Grand Championship
Division winners face a final, undisclosed cutting pattern.
Rules & Judging
- Competitors must supply their own shinken (live blade) in safe, serviceable condition; blades are inspected before competition.
- All targets are supplied and prepared by the event; competitors may not modify or substitute targets.
- Scoring weighs cut completeness, blade angle (hasuji), body mechanics, and target stand stability after the cut.
- Failure to control the blade, dropping the sword, or unsafe behavior results in immediate disqualification.
- Traditional attire (keikogi and hakama) is required; safety officers may halt any pass at any moment.
- Head judge decisions are final; protests must be raised before the next competitor's pass.
